Why Winnipeg needs a Municipal Green Party - Now
Check the Voting Record of Current Mayor and City Councillors on:
Urban Sprawl
1. Plan Winnipeg Amendment - Waverley West — January 26, 2005
Yeas: Mayor Katz, Councillors Angus, Clement, De Smedt, Eadie, Lazarenko, Lubosch, Magnifico, O'Shaughnessy, Pagtakhan, Steeves, Thomas (12)
Nays: Councillors Benham, Gerbasi, Smith, Wyatt (4)
The Greens believe the city does not need a new, car-dependent, mega-suburb the size of Manitoba's second largest city, Brandon, in the south-west corner of Winnipeg.
Kate Sjoberg analyzes the "need" in her paper, "3,000 acres of Phony Demand: Consideration on Waverley West", Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, October, 2005.
2. Subdivision and re-zoning between the Perimeter Highway and Camp Manitou Road, on the north bank of the Assiniboine River (Chipman subdivision) — January 25, 2006
Yeas: Mayor Katz, Councillors Clement, De Smedt, Eadie, Lazarenko, Magnifico, Pagtakhan, Steeves, Swandel, Wyatt (10)
Nays: Councillors Benham, Gerbasi, Lubosch, Smith, Thomas (5)
Council's approval of this subdivision means that residential development leapfrogs outside the west Perimeter Highway. The land is on the north bank of the Assiniboine River, between the Perimeter and Camp Manitou Road (the boundary with the R.M. of Headingley). Access to the development will be down a 1.3 km. cul-de-sac. The Fire Department recommended two permanent accesses but the majority on Council voted otherwise. Expect the Chipman subdivision to trigger more ex-urban residential development westward in Headingley.
Olywest Project
Olywest Project - Economic Incentive Package — November 23, 2005
Yeas: Mayor Katz, Councillors Clement, De Smedt, Eadie, Magnifico, O'Shaughnessy, Pagtakhan, Steeves, Swandel (9)
Nays: Councillors Benham, Gerbasi, Lazarenko, Lubosch, Smith, Wyatt (6)
The Olywest proposal is for a $200-million, 300,000 sq. ft. hog processing plant in St. Boniface Industrial Park. The province and the city are contributing $30-million in loans and other assistance.
Residents living down-wind and neighbouring businesses in St. Boniface Industrial Park were not given sufficient notification or information. Traffic disruption, noise and odour problems have yet to be addressed to the satisfaction of people living and working in the area. A number of the nearby businesses operating under conditions of high air quality standards have expressed serious concerns about their long-term viability.
