November 2006
Many thanks for the continued support and good wishes for our young and vibrant party. A special thanks to three behind-the-scenes people: Thank you Paul Little for a superb job on the web-site; Judy Chapman for her flair and patience in producing all of the candidates' brochures; and Pam Sanford who is the Official Agent for all candidates. Please keep the campaign donations coming — just follow the links on the web-site or call the office at 943-1506.
Thank you too to the six candidates who ran for the Winnipeg Green Party in the October 25, 2006 civic election. While none was elected this year, take a look at the impression that they made in the six wards in which they ran:
- St. James - Brooklands
Constance Menzies received 1,387 votes in a field of four strong candidates. Constance came third with 16.5% of the vote. - Elmwood - East Kildonan
Dave Danyluk received 1,657 votes, coming in second of four candidates with 19.3% of the vote. - Transcona
Steve Smith received 581 votes, coming in third of three with 6.3% of the vote. - Mynarski
Rob Galston received 315 votes, coming in fourth in a field of five with 4.2% of the vote. - St. Norbert
Glenda Whiteman received 2891 votes, coming in with 28.1% of the vote in a two-way race - St. Vital
Markus Buchart received 1,049 votes, coming in third of three with 7.8% of the vote.
Congratulations to all six candidates. They sent out brochures with the Winnipeg Green Party platform and did their best to get out Party's sustainable development message. Almost 8,000 citizens voted for them, even though the city's Senior Election Official did not allow any party affiliation on the ballot paper (much more about this on our web-site).
Voter turn-out in the city election averaged a disappointing 38% of eligible voters. Within the wards, voter turn-out ranged from 49% in St. Boniface to 29% in Elmwood and 28% in Mynarski.
What next for the Winnipeg Green Party?
That is up to all of us.
We'll continue to banish acclamations in Winnipeg but more than that, we need the input of members and supporters to guide the party over the next four years. By 2010, Winnipeggers may indeed be anxious to turn out to vote for the Green party.
Our next meeting will be Saturday, 25 November at 9 a.m.. It will be open to the public. The location and other details will be posted and sent out shortly.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.
